About the artwork

Two or more versions of the same character often appear in my work. On a surface level, this represents the relationships we have with one another, but it mainly explores our relationship with ourselves. In mindfulness practices, we are often encouraged to detach from the thoughts and voices in our minds and observe them from a passenger's point of view. This has always made me feel like these practices refer to more than one being within everyone: the one who thinks and the observer. The characters are depicted holding masks to their faces. These masks visually reference the famous symbols from ancient Greek theatre while drawing design influences from Pre-Columbian and African art. In theatre, masks were more than disguises; they were crucial in transforming actors into characters. This is something we, as humans, experience in reality. In both theatre and life, masks can reveal and conceal true identity. People may use masks to explore different facets of their personality or to hide aspects they are not ready to share. This artwork highlights the universal human experience of using literal and metaphorical masks to navigate life.

“In both theatre and life, masks can reveal and conceal true identity.”
